Game for Green Challenge

Thursday, August 30, 2018 / by The Boys' Brigade in Malaysia

More than 2,000 participants from Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia will converge on St Xavier’s Institution in Penang for the five-day camp with the theme ‘Creative Creation’.

Based on the concept of going green, the event will centre on environmental conservation.

Members have pledged to reduce the use of plastics and paper as far as possible throughout the event.

Organising chairman Teh Gim Beng said it was important for the people to play their part for the sake of the future generations.

This minimises emission of carbon monoxide from driving vehicles to and from venues.

“Even registration is done via email to reduce paper usage,” he said in support of the state government’s Cleaner, Greener Penang initiative.

He added that the camp was also aimed at fostering goodwill among members in the spirit of 1Malaysia.

“We strive to develop youths to become role model citizens for our country by emphasising four aspects of growth which are educational, physical, social and spiritual,” he said.

Among the programmes lined up are a street dance competition, a treasure hunt around the inner-city heritage site and traditional competitions for marching bands, squad foot drill, dancing and singing.

Former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is scheduled to launch the event at City Stadium at 7pm tonight.

Founded by Sir William Alexander Smith in Glasgow in 1883, the Boys’ Brigade is the first uniformed youth organisation in the world, spanning over 60 countries.

The BB movement came to Malaysia in 1946 with the starting of the 1st Penang Company.

Today, it has spread throughout the country, with a membership of about 9,000 in more than 100 companies.
