Pesta 2020 Online - It’s a First!

“Pesta” in Bahasa Malaysia means Festival, but the Boys’ Brigade’s Pesta has a long-standing tradition since it’s first introduced in 1966. However, the very first “Pesta” for the Boys’ Brigade started as the National Review and Display which was held at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on 4 August 1966. The Guest of Honor at that time was the Honorable Assistant Minister of Culture, Youth & Sports, Engku Muhsein bin Abdul Kadir, DPMT. More than 600 members (including 400 from outside of KL & PJ) were taking part. 

However, it was not until 1968 where the term “Pesta” was first officially coined with the combination of three events and held from 7th to 14th August 1968 at Penang.

Fast forward to the year 2020, the biennial tradition for BBM that was done physically had to be canceled possibly for the first time in the history of BBM due to the Covid19 pandemic. 

However, the organizing team which consisted of the Melaka and Muar Boys’ Brigade officers did not want to give it out. With determination, the first-ever Pesta Online was born. Pesta rises from the ashes in a digital form with fun, fellowship and engagement did across a week from 1 June to 5 June 2020. Of course, the way Pesta Online had to be done more creatively than a typical camp style. Nonetheless, the spirit of impacting lives still continues.

The Pesta 2020 ends on a high note with more than hundreds of adults and young people being engaged. The next Pesta that we are looking forward to is the Pesta 2022 which will be hosted by Sarawak State Council. See you then!
