KOTA KlNABALU: After 36 years of the Sabah Boys' Brigade (BB) Movement's first camp in 1981, a second camp will be organized by BB on June 3 - 6 this year in conjunction with its Golden Jubilee Anniversary.

Its former State president, Donald Soh Sun Kheng said that the second camp, 50th Anniversary International Camp would be held in Kiulu, Tuaran.

Other than that, he added that Sabah BB would also be holding a Founder's Day & Gala Dinner on September 23 to commemorate BB's 50th anniversary.

Donald was speaking at a press conference to commerate the birthplace of the Kota Kinabalu BB at Tokio Marine (M) Sdn Bhd in Jalan Pantai here yesterday, officiated by KK City Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.

Yeo placed a memorial plaque on the ground floor of Tokio Marine (M) Sdn Bhd.

The symbolic event was attended by several pioneer officers, including a Singaporean, Seah Pong Hin, who is the son of the first founding Kota Kinabalu BB Company captain, the late Seah Yun Khong.

Back in 1967, the place is the exact spot where a dozen boys met regularly on Saturdays under the aegis of the defunct Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of Sabah.

Meanwhile, Yeo suggested that Sabah BB and the City Hall cooperate in creating an awareness effort to protect the environment.

The BB is the world's first uniformed youth movement, which was founded in Glasgow, Scotland in 1883 by an army officer, Sir William Alexander Smith.

Since then the BB has become a world-wide movement, whose members are easily recognized by their striking dark blue uniforms with white haversacks and shining badges and awards.

A church-based organisation with deep spiritual objectives, the BB also advocates obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and righteous living among its members.

Members meet for weekly activities, which include Bible lessons, drill, physical training, habit-based badge classes, sports and games.

Since making its debut in Kota Kinabalu 50 years ago, the BB has now spread to many parts of Sabah with Companies (branches) and school-based platoons in Sandakan, Tawau, Keningau and Pitas.

There are now over 100 BB companies nationwide, with a specially large presence in Sabah and Sarawak.

Sabah has 15 active BB branches and a total of more than 1,000 members in Sabah, including a school based uniformed organisation.
